Virtual Akron

The name "Akron" was derived from a Greek word meaning "high" since the Portage Summit was the highest point on the Ohio & Erie Canal. Akron's original population was approximately 200. Today it totals more than 200,000.

Rotayna was sculpted by Peter Toth in 1985 out of a huge Red Oak. It weighs 17 tons and stands 36 feet tall in front of Akron's Fairlawn Elementary School. Rotaynah commemorates Akron's native American heritage.
